President leads NUST’s moment of pride

THE National University of Science and Technology was a sea of colour, music and joy yesterday as 2 504 graduates proudly walked across the stage to receive their degrees during the institution’s 31st graduation ceremony.

Parents ululated, friends cheered and graduates beamed with pride as the moment they had long awaited finally arrived. But beyond the caps, gowns and applause, the day carried moments of history, honouring not just the young graduates but also two giants of Zimbabwe’s industrial and construction sectors.

Construction magnate James Ross Goddard, fondly known as Nkosana, and industrialist Busisa Moyo were conferred with honorary doctorates in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the nation.

Goddard received a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Water Engineering (Honoris Causa), while Moyo was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Leadership.

For Goddard, who has spent decades shaping the country’s landscape through iconic construction projects, the honour was deeply personal.

“I am in disbelief and at a loss for words. This is a great honour; I never thought I would ever be honoured in such a manner. I am truly grateful to the people of Zimbabwe for the recognition,” he said, his voice full of humility.

Moyo, a driving force in the industrial sector and a household name in business circles, described the award as a call to do even more.

“Receiving this honorary doctorate is a testament to the resilience and innovation that drive the industrial sector in our country. I am deeply honoured to be acknowledged in this way,” he said

“It really spurs me to serve the community of Zimbabwe in different ways to tackle various challenges to solve problems that we have to continue to contribute to our great nation.”

Moyo said the staff at Nust has been extremely instrumental in working with them.

“To be honoured by your own is really touching. I have been honoured in countries like France for various contributions we have made to the economy. It is really moving if your own kith and kin look at what you are doing,” he said.

The atmosphere throughout the day was nothing short of electric. Graduates streamed onto the university grounds from as early as 8AM, some in animated chatter, others quietly soaking in the significance of the day. The students’ choir filled the air with harmonious melodies, giving the ceremony a festive yet dignified rhythm.

The arrival of President Mnangagwa added yet another layer of prestige. As he walked into the arena, the crowd erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.

“It is an incredible privilege to have President Mnangagwa with us today. His support means a great deal to all of us,” whispered one parent as the national anthem began.

For many families, the day was more than just a graduation, but the culmination of sacrifices, late nights and dreams fulfilled.

“We are thrilled to be part of this special day, surrounded by our loved ones and fellow graduates,” said one excited graduate, her gown fluttering in the breeze as she posed for pictures with her family.
