Acting Director General for the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), Ms Claudine Sigam, has commended Zimbabwe for banning the export of raw lithium, describing the move as a model for other African countries.

Speaking in the capacity of the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, Ms Francisca Tatchoup Belope, at the launch of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) National Programme of Action that is currently underway at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden, Ms Sigam said African minerals belong to African people.

She went on to highlight President Mnangagwa’s “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo” mantra, saying it reflects the need for African nations to take charge of their mineral production and processing systems.

“Your Excellency, you have set a good example for African countries,” she said, adding that Zimbabwe’s approach to lithium should be emulated across the continent.

“Your approach to lithium is an example to all of Africa. Value addition of lithium not only provides jobs but also increases the value of our minerals.”
