President Mnangagwa is this afternoon attending a Southern African Development Community extraordinary virtual summit meant to appoint Chairperson of the Regional bloc’s Organ on Politics Defense and Security Cooperation.

The summit will also appoint Deputy Executive Secretary responsible for Regional Integration.

The extraordinary summit is being Chaired by Sadc Chairperson and South African leader, President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In his opening remarks, President Ramaphosa said the two positions were critical for the proper functioning of Sadc.

“The second important matter before us concerns the leadership of the Organ
on Politics, Defence and Security cooperation. Peace, security and political stability are, as we all
know, indispensable foundations for economic development and regional integration. Without
peace, there
can be no sustained investment, without stability there can be no lasting prosperity,” said President Ramaphosa.

He said the region had registered significant progress in peace building.
“Our region
has made significant progress over the years in consolidating democracy resolving conflicts and
strengthening cooperation in defense and security. We should take pride in these achievements
at the same time we recognize that a number of our member states
continue to confront political and security challenges,” he said.
