SINCE 1980, 73- year-old Gogo Elizabeth Mahiya says she has always voted for Zanu PF.

This year, the grandmother from Muzindi Village, in the Chisakati area of Zaka Central Constituency is more motivated than ever to cast her ballot for Zanu-PF after the ruling party election campaign train stormed into her village with record-breaking numbers at Chinorumba High School on Sunday.

“I am a card-carrying Zanu PF member and I am unapologetic in my support for the party. I have voted in every election since 1980. My Zanu PF cell is called Muziri, in Ward 9 of Zaka Central constituency. I feel so proud that today we hosted President Mnangagwa. This has given me more motivation to vote for him on August 2023. I can’t wait for polling day to cast my vote,” she said.

Gogo Mahiya is one of the tens of the estimated record crowd of 124 000 Zanu PF supporters that attended the Star Rally in Zaka. This humongous crowd was just the latest to leap at records since the revolutionary party launched its election campaign in Chipinge last month.

When President Mnangagwa arrived to greet the crowd around Chinorumba High School, there were scenes of utter joy as the people erupted into delirium.

Several residents of Masvingo who spoke to The Herald said they will vote for President Mnangagwa to repay him for undertaking countless developmental initiatives in the province.

They said they see President Mnangagwa as the paragon of development.

For Cde Godfrey Soul, who is a  member of Zanu PF’s Shungunevhu cell, President Mnangagwa’s victory is cast in stone because the people of Masvingo have attained several tangible benefits from the Second Republic’s policies.

“For years, we have suffered from droughts in Zaka. A large part of the area falls in Natural Region 5. Access to water has been enhanced because there are solar-powered boreholes in almost every village in this constituency.

“For example, we now have solar-powered boreholes at Chinyabako Village, Chinorumba High School, Chinorumba Business Centre, and Maraire Village.

“All these solar-powered boreholes were brought by the Second Republic. We are able to do home gardens because water is now readily available,” he said.

Masvingo’s Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Ezra Chadzamira said:

“We have come in large numbers to thank you as a province for the work that you are doing for us.

“There are 677 projects that you have implemented in Masvingo, including the construction of new schools,  clinics, and bridges. Since the Second Republic came into office, it has also managed to drill 1291 boreholes”.

Cde Chadzamira said the people of Masvingo have also benefitted immensely from the Presidential inputs scheme that has virtually eliminated hunger and also helped to make the province exceed its winter wheat planting target.

He said Masvingo, which is where the country’s name comes from, is proud of Zanu PF’s rich heritage and will not disappoint, as it will vote resoundingly for the ruling party.

Masvingo provincial chair Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa said:

“We have 26 Parliamentary constituencies and 242 wards, we want to win them all for you Mr President. You can sleep easy because Masvingo will work for you and you will win.”

Another Zanu PF staunch supporter from Zaka Mary Mesa (63) from Chirume Cell Ward 9 said: “By 5 am I was here. Zanu PF is my party for life.

I will never vote for any other party except Zanu PF. We have seen many developmental projects here in Zaka Central, there is no other party that can do more than what Zanu PF is doing.
