President Mnangagwa opens SADC PF Plenary Assembly

President Mnangagwa has officially opened the 57th SADC Parliamentary Forum Plenary Assembly which is being held in Victoria Falls.

The Plenary Assembly, which will end on Saturday, is being held under the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Effective and Efficient Parliamentary Processes in the SADC Region: Experiences, Challenges and Opportunities.”

In his remarks, President Mnangagwa, who is also the SADC Chairperson, said the assembly is in sync with global trends.

“I urge SADC parliaments to embrace AI and other latest technologies to improve their legislative work,” he said.

Various organisations also presented solidarity messages.

The organisations include the Pan African Parliament, which was represented by its president, Chief Fortune Charumbira; the Southern Africa Youth Parliament, which was represented by Ms Angela Dube, who is also the reigning Miss Albinism Zimbabwe; the Forum of Parliaments of Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR), represented by the Secretary General, Dr Deo Mapinga; Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), which was represented by the chairperson, Dr Christopher Kalila, and the SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Corporate Affairs, Dr Judith Kateera.

The organisations pledged to work with the SADC PF in its agenda to come up with laws and policies to ensure the responsible usage of AI and other latest technologies.

This is the sixth time Zimbabwe has hosted the Plenary Assembly.
