President Mnangagwa on Tuesday reminisced about the time he led the first group of Zanla fighters to receive military training in China 60 years ago to dismantle the colonial regime back home.

Addressing staff at the Zimbabwean Embassy here, the President said back then, he had never imagined that he would one day return to China as the leader of a free Zimbabwe.

“I first came here leading a group of five combatants in 1965 to receive military training. I think I’m the only surviving member of that group. The second group was led by (National Hero) General (Josiah) Tongogara,” said President Mnangagwa.

“When I came here for the first time, I never imagined that I would return one day as leader of a free Zimbabwe.”

Before leaving the embassy, the President signed the guest book and called on staff to work diligently to preserve Zimbabwe’s cordial relations.
