Harare Bureau

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday honoured two courageous children who rescued their mother from a terrifying crocodile attack in Mhondoro two months ago.

The President met Luckmore Chikavamombe (12), and Peace Magaya (11) at State House yesterday to commend their bravery and offer them a well-deserved reward of covering their educational expenses up to university level and he gave them $5 000 cash each.

“Today I met two brave young heroes, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, from Mhondoro. They saved their mother from a crocodile attack. Inspired by their courage, I’ve taken on their education fees and awarded them $5 000 each. Let’s nurture such bravery and compassion in our youth,” said President Mnangagwa on his official X account.

One of the children, Peace Magaya, recounted the harrowing incident, explaining how they managed to overpower the crocodile.

“The crocodile was dragging our mother in the water. Then we took a stick and started poking the crocodile’s eyes until it released its jaws that had deeply wounded our mother,” he recounted.

The children were accompanied to the State House by Mabvuku-Tafara Legislator, Mr Pedzai Sakupwanya.

“The story of these brave kids touched the hearts of many as they exhibited bravery. We would like to thank the President for his gesture of offering a scholarship for the kids,” said Mr Sakupwanya.

The brave children, who attend Dondoshava Primary School in Mhondoro, Mashonaland West Province, gained national attention when a video of their heroic act went viral in January. In the video, the children recounted the terrifying incident and their courageous efforts to rescue their mother from the clutches of the crocodile.
