PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will on Thursday morning commission the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine in Kamungoma, Gutu District, Masvingo.
Kamungoma is one of the liberation heritage sites in Zimbabwe which evokes memories of the struggle for independence and the brutality that was unleashed on Blacks by the colonial regime.
It memorialises the dark side of the country’s history where many civilians lost their lives while sheltering and providing for freedom fighters during the liberation struggle.
One process that united the masses and the freedom lighters was organising overnight political education meetings/Pungwes.
A record 104 civilians and one freedom fighter are reported to have been killed at Kamungoma Pungwe gathering on the night of 14 May 1978.
Many survivors of this callous massacre lost their limbs while some still have bullets lodged in their bodies.
The Gutu populace is still traumatised by the memories of the indiscriminate killing of their family members and friends perpetrated by the Rhodesian Security Forces at Kamungona.
