President Mnangagwa is set to preside over a significant tree planting exercise this morning, reinforcing the government’s commitment to combat deforestation and climate change. This event comes on the heels of a successful campaign in 2023, where over 22 million trees were planted nationwide, though falling short of the Forestry Commission’s ambitious target of 25 million.
The nationwide initiative, spearheaded by the Forestry Commission, aims to restore the country’s forests and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Ms. Violet Makoto, spokesperson for the Forestry Commission, emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts, stating, “For the 2022/2023 season, we set a target of planting 25 million trees and we also want this to be the target for the coming season of 2023/24.”
Despite not reaching the previous year’s goal, the campaign has seen significant participation and raised awareness about environmental issues in Zimbabwe. The upcoming planting exercise is expected to draw attention to the ongoing challenges of deforestation in the region and the need for sustainable practices moving forward.
