PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has donated 60 tonnes of maize to about 4,000 families in Bikita to alleviate hunger due to the drought. Bikita South MP, Jeppy Jaboon, who handed over the food at Nyika Growth Point on Saturday on behalf of the President said each family got a 20kg bag of maize, enough to take them to the next month or so.
“We received 60 tonnes of maize from President Mugabe which we distributed to about 4,000 families at Nyika Growth Point over the weekend. Each family received a 20 kg of maize and we made sure that everyone who travelled to the venue got his or her share,” said Cde Jaboon.
He said while more people still need food aid in the district, the donation was handy as a number of families had run out of food, with orphans and vulnerable children as well as the elderly being the hardest hit.
Cde Jaboon, who is also Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial commissar, said some companies had also come to the province’s rescue.
He said Zanu-PF led by its most senior leader in the province, Cde Josiah Hungwe, successfully negotiated with Tongaat Hullet for the winter maize project which has seen 1,400 tonnes of maize being produced.
The maize, Cde Jaboon said, will soon be distributed among villagers in need of food across the province.
The latest donation follows yet another one in Chivi by First Lady Cde Grace Mugabe who donated about 20 tonnes of mealie-meal to 2,000 families last week.
School children from less privileged families also received school shoes, tracksuits and jerseys.
