President Mnangagwa has availed 40 borehole drilling machines into Harare, Chitungwiza and Epworth urban areas to ease water challenges that these areas have faced for several years.

Successive opposition councils have failed to address falling water supplies, caused by lack of maintenance at treatment works and along pipelines, which has left residents having to resort to unclean water sources, thereby getting exposed to water-borne diseases, or paying high prices demanded by those with private wells and boreholes.

Across the country, 35 000 village boreholes are being drilled as President Mnangagwa moves to ensure every village has a source of safe, clean water and a nutrition garden so as to generate money for the community and improve nutrition. But he has also extended the programme into urban areas, and especially Harare Metropolitan, where the councils are unable to supply water to all residents through their taps, despite charging water fees for not delivering.

The Second Republic is determined to sustain development and bring public services closer to the people.

Addressing more than 10 000 party supporters at a mop-up rally at Domboramwari in Epworth South constituency on Sunday, Zanu PF Harare provincial chairman Cde Godwills Masimirembwa said President Mnangagwa through the Presidential borehole drilling scheme had released 40 rigs into Harare Metropolitan province.

The European Union Election Observation Mission Zimbabwe team also attended the rally as the nation warms up to free and fair elections.

“As we head for the elections, there is a borehole drilling blitz in Harare which is going on.

“Each constituency has at least one borehole drilling machine which will drill boreholes until the water challenges in that area have been resolved, while we wait for the water supplies from Kunzvi, Muda and other dams which are being constructed by the Government,” said Cde Masimirembwa.

Through President Mnangagwa’s work ethic, Cde Masimirembwa is confident of winning all the constituencies.

“We must win all the constituencies and 77 wards in Harare come Wednesday this week. We are simply saying President Mnangagwa has done so much for this country in the last five years he has been in office.

“We have a President who cares for his people, who cares for the country, he has our future, our present and our history is further on him.

“Let’s go out in our numbers and make sure we retain him in office and we ensure Zanu PF rules this country forever,” said Cde Masimirembwa.

Zanu PF Secretary for Education, Research and Ideology Cde Charles Tavengwa urged party members to remain loyal to the party and vote in their numbers on Wednesday.

The party candidate for Epworth South Constituency Cde Taedzwa Mutana is confident of winning the seat back to Zanu PF.

Meanwhile, in Chitungwiza North Constituency, five more solarised boreholes were drilled yesterday under Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme as the Second Republic paces up efforts to end water woes in urban areas.

This follows successive years of failure by opposition led councils to provide basic services such as potable water to urban dwellers, opening the doors to the spread of diseases like cholera.

In separate interviews, Chitungwiza residents hailed President Mnangagwa for the timely intervention.

“We are thrilled since previously many people had turned to dangerous water sources, but now we are celebrating the coming of safe water at our doorsteps,” said Ms Precious Chaukura of Unit O.

Another resident Ms Mitchell Gutsa said: ” We appreciate how closely President Mnangagwa’s soldiers (Zanu PF candidates) are collaborating with us and helping us identify all the places that require boreholes.

“Today we witnessed five boreholes being drilled in all the five wards under Chitungwiza North Constituency.”

Zanu PF candidate for Chitungwiza North Cde Spencer Machangara accused the opposition for tearing down cities.

“Our main challenge is poor service delivery because we have inept opposition leaders but we are glad that President Mnangagwa has chipped in to address all these challenges.

“However, Chitungwiza residents have vowed to support Zanu PF after learning that it is the only party that can ensure them a prosperous life,” said Cde Machangara.
