“With the onset of the rainy season, the President saw it fit to provide the inputs on time,” said Cde Chigumba.
About 90 tonnes of seed maize were distributed at cell level and an additional 261 tonnes of fertiliser would be distributed to the Hatcliffe farmers.
The beneficiaries were drawn mainly from Ward 42 which consists of Borrowdale 2 and 3, Muzinda waVaMugabe, Nyika Vanhu and Ernest Kadungure districts.
A beneficiary of the scheme, Ms Evelyn Masinga, could not hold back her joy, saying the initiative was timely for this farming season which she said she had not fully prepared for due to financial constraints.
“I could not afford a 10kg seed maize, which costs at least US$20 in retail shops.
“I am relieved I expect to harvest something this coming year,” she said.
“The President has remembered us and we feel uplifted to face the world. I was desperate because I did not have anywhere to turn to,” Ms Masinga said.
Harare Province political commissar Cde Onisimo Gore said it was important to exercise transparency in the distribution of seed to ensure that deserving families benefit.
“I am calling on the beneficiaries to utilise the seed in the best way possible. It will be disheartening to learn that the seed being distributed here is now on the streets for sale or has been diverted from its intended beneficiaries,” said Cde Gore.
The scheme is meant to benefit vulnerable people like orphans, widows and child-headed families.
The Presidential Well-wishers’ Input Scheme is running in all the 78 wards that constitute Harare Province.
