DISADVANTAGED students from various tertiary educational institutions, who are having their fees paid through the President Mnangagwa OPEAAL Presidential Scholarship, said they are ready to play their part in the development of the country and help fulfil Vision 2030, to make Zimbabwe an upper-middle-class economy.
Ambassador Uebert Angel, who is the Presidential Envoy and Ambassador at Large to Europe and the Americas (OPEAAL), sponsors the scholarship.
The scholarship that targets students at tertiary institutions from disadvantaged backgrounds is an apolitical facility that has been welcomed by students across the country.
To date, Ambassador Angel pays tuition fees for more than 2 600 students with the aim of reaching 10 000 disadvantaged students through the scholarship that was founded in honour of President Mnangagwa.
It is built on the recommendations of President Mnangagwa’s principle to assist all Zimbabweans regardless of their political affiliation, and fulfil his mission of “Development that leaves no one and no place behind”.
Belvedere Teachers College Students Representative Council (SRC) president Miss Cathrine Kaitano said the initiative has allowed many needy students to complete their studies.
“The coming of this programme has helped many students complete their studies as well as the reintroduction of the students’ grants that will help us in raising funds for our tuition fees. Most of us were failing to pay fees on time but the grants will help us.
“I am one of the beneficiaries of this programme, I extend my sincere gratitude to His Excellency for remembering all the students in need of school fees.”
Another student teacher Ms Vimbai Goronga said such an initiative has helped many students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“I am in my last year at this college. I take this opportunity to thank President Mnangagwa for the gift of education through his school fees programme”.
Another student Rutendo Muvengwa said the Second Republic has made tremendous progress in improving the welfare of students.
“We are grateful to the leadership of this country in liaison with Ambassador Angel for the fees programme. I have managed to finish the course. May God bless them and may they be given more so that they can touch the whole nation,” she said.
Mr Philip Gurupira applauded the initiative saying it helps students focus on their studies.
