IT took just a couple of minutes at a press conference and Prince Dube had charmed sports writers with his ‘hunger for success attitude’ that the player wants to replicate on the field for his new team Azam FC.
“I am very happy I just signed for Azam, I have come here to help the team to compete for trophies and also use every chance I get to score goals,” Dube told reporters after signing.
For seasoned sports reporters, the striker’s statement is an all too familiar story that they have heard countless times whenever foreign players join a Tanzanian team.
But for Dennis Mabuka, a veteran writer in the trenches of sports journalism, there was something about the young Zimbabwean that got him convinced that Azam FC had signed a gem that would shine brighter with each game.
“After the press conference we watched the youngster train with the rest of the team and there is something about the way he carries himself that tells you that he is a winner. I asked the other guys (sports reporters) what they think of the new player and most of them agreed with me that he is a good signing.
“The fans will love him, there is no doubt about that. If he settles well into Tanzanian life it shouldn’t take long before he starts scoring goals for the team,” Mabuka told B-Metro Sport from Dar es Salaam.
Dube shouldn’t find it hard settling in well at Azam FC as he has joined two Zimbabweans – Bruce Kangwa and Never Tigere- at the well sponsored side.
The former Highlanders striker had this to say when asked if he is familiar with the Tanzanian league: “I did know a few things because my brother (Kangwa) came here some years back and he had some good knowledge about it, he told me how big the league is and I know what to expect.”
The Zimbabwean international penned a two-year contract with Azam FC in a deal that is understood to have earned Bosso US$50,000.
