DEFENDING champions of the schools tennis league Prince Edward kept their heads high after dismissing Peterhouse 12-0 over the weekend, writes Mbachi Mutukula-Mare-gere.
Prince Edward, boosted by their best players like Tafadzwa Mahachi, Michael Shoniwa, Nigel Muvuti, Alois Chinyoka, Godfrey Ngoshi, Ngonidzashe Mudoti and siblings Kuzivakwashe and Tirivashe Zvamada, remained firmly in control after winning in all the matches played in different age-groups.
The Under-16 team beat Peterhouse 11-1 while the Under-14 team triumphed 6-0.
Prince Edward came tops in the schools tennis competitions last season and they are the current champions of the “Mim Du Toit” schoolboys tennis cup after dismissing former champions St George’s College in the final on an overall score of 10-2.
“We are very happy with our boys. They played quite good although the rains came when the Under–15s and the Under-14s were still playing. We had to stop just before the last round of the matches.
“The Prince Edward team is proud of the achievements and the support that they get from the school’s administration,” said the team’s head coach Lincent Chitiyo.
One of the players, Tirivashe Zvamada, said the team wants to remain at the top of the schools league.
“We are looking forward to retaining the title this year. We are training hard and I am sure we will get it because of our hard work and the support that we get from our coach and the school.”
Meanwhile, Harare has selected 12 players in the Under-15 category to represent the province at the inter-provincial tennis tournament during the schools half-term break.
Top seed Tadiwa Mberi of St George’s College got himself a first position after beating schoolmate and second seed Munashe Chingono 6-4, 6-1 while third place went to Prince Edward’s Shingirai Kamucheka when he beat Kudzanai Saramunda of Eaglesvale 6-2, 6-3.
Saramunda came fourth while St John’s College’s Gary King got the fifth place when he beat his schoolmate Maudhla Seremani 6-3, 6-4.
Karenga William of St George’s College beat Gateway’s Simon Tafara 6-2, 6-1 to land sixth ahead of the latter player who was placed seventh.
Eighth place went to Chisina Chengetai of St George’s College when he got a bye ahead of his schoolmate Tawanda Chigumete.
Sylvester Michael of St John’s College beat Jason Foulks, also of the same school, 6-1, 2-6, 7-2 and got the 11th position.
