PRINCE EDWARD, DOMINICAN CONVENT CROWNED CHESS CHAMPS

PRINCE Edward and Dominican Convent Harare have been crowned the 2026 Lomagundi Invitational Chess tournament seniors’ champions.

The Prince Edward team, led by Christian Nyatsombo, managed 10 points to win the Open boys crown.

They finished ahead of Riverdale from Bulawayo, who amassed eight points, while Kutama College finished third on six points.

Kutama College had dominated the tournament in the previous years.

The senior girls’ category was won by Dominican Convent Harare who managed 10 points with Ropafadzo Gwatidzo producing an outstanding performance.

Chisipite and Lomagundi were second and third in the senior girls’ category.

Chisipite, who had in-form Munotida Mtandwa, finished on eight points while Lomagundi got seven points.

Convent Harare also won the juniors girls tournament by getting 10 points.

They pushed Riverdale into second place. The boys’ junior category was won by Kutama College who managed 10 points. They finished ahead of Christian Brothers College, who picked eight points, while St George’s finished with seven points.

Lomagundi Invitational Chess tournament director, Maurice Mutowembwa, was happy with the response from the schools. There was an increased number of participants

“We are happy that the tournament has received an increased number of participants.  This year we had 14 schools talking part and it was a big increase compared to last year.

“We managed to get the support from several partners and Pastor Kahoba was the chief arbiter,” said Mutowembwa.
