THE safety and security of learners returning to school for the third term must be prioritised, law enforcement agents have urged stakeholders.
Schools open for the third term tomorrow (Tuesday).
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi made the call today in a statement.
“As schools across the country prepare to open for the third term on September 8, 2026, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges parents and guardians, school authorities, transport operators, motorists and the public to prioritise the safety and security of learners as they travel to boarding schools throughout the country. Some learners will also be travelling home from holiday to prepare for the third term schools opening day,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi said transport arrangements for learners must be convenient, urging motorists to be cautious at all times and uphold traffic rules and regulations.
“Parents, guardians and school authorities should ensure that children use safe and reliable transport. Where possible, learners should avoid travelling at night, while vehicles to transport them should be roadworthy and suitable for carrying passengers. Transport operators and drivers are urged not to overload vehicles or carry learners together with goods and luggage in a manner that compromises their safety. Drivers must also avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs. Motorists are urged to exercise caution near schools, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and other areas frequently used by learners,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He also called for vigilance against criminal activities targeting learners and learning institutions.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police calls upon school authorities, parents and guardians to remain vigilant against criminal activities that may target learners and learning institutions. Schools are discouraged from keeping large sums of cash at their premises,” he said.
