A Zimbabwe Prison Service officer who allegedly connived with an incarcerated man to swindle the prisoner’s wife of US$8 700 has been nabbed while trying to transfer the money into his account.
Archiford Nyaungwe (31) of Unit N Chitungwiza appeared in court last week to answer to fraud charges.
He was not asked to plead to the charges before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini who remanded him to today on US$30 bail.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa told the court that Nyaungwe hatched a plan with an incarcerated man identified as B Mupande to swindle the man’s wife identified as Ms Muleya. Mr Ndambakuwa alleged that on October 19 and at around 11am, Nyaungwe went to Kingdom Bank Town Centre branch in the dormitory town.

The court heard that upon arrival, he produced an internal transfer form written B Mupande as the account holder of account number 57003995.

It is further alleged that Nyaungwe claimed to be the owner of the account and wanted to transfer US$8 700 into his other account.
The bank manager discovered the irregularity upon checking the details to the account holder and noted that it belonged to Ms Muleya.
This prompted the bank manager to alert police officers who apprehended Nyaungwe.
