Prisons across the country are opening their gates today, allowing families and other visitors the opportunity to meet with inmates.

From today to December 14, inmates will have the chance to reconnect with their loved ones.

Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service spokesperson, highlighted the importance of these visits.

“We urge visitors to bring their national identity cards and avoid bringing prepared food,” she said.

“For security reasons, we recommend purchasing food from our premises, as external food is not permitted.”

Families, friends, churches, and other stakeholders are invited to meet with inmates during this special week, and are encouraged to bring small gifts or treats for them.

The prison will also have braai stands available for those who wish to enjoy a meal together.

“Prison visits are vital in promoting the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders back into society,” added Ass-Comm Khanyezi.
