GOVERNMENT has established a multidisciplinary team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into a fatal bus accident in Rutenga that left four people dead and 14 others injured.
The incident occurred when a South Africa-bound Munhenzva bus veered off the road and overturned.
The team will assess the mechanical condition of the vehicle, driver conduct, road infrastructure and compliance with traffic regulations. The findings will guide the implementation of evidence-based, scientific, legal and administrative measures aimed at enhancing road safety and preventing future tragedies.
The Cape Town-bound bus, which was carrying 26 passengers, overturned and landed on its roof after the driver reportedly lost control at the 155km peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway at around 5:20 pm.
Four people died while 14 others were injured.
The injured victims were taken to Rutenga Clinic for treatment and were further referred to Neshuro Hospital for additional management.
Bodies of the victims were taken to Neshuro Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The names of the four victims will be released in due course once the bodies have been identified by their next of kin.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has since sent a condolence message to the families of the deceased.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address the nation on the fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the 155-kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road. Tragically, four people died and fourteen others were injured when a Munhenzva bus veered off the road and crashed. On behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families.
“We mourn the demise of the men and women who perished in this crash. Our thoughts are with all the families of the people who were killed in the crash and our prayers are with those injured as they continue to receive treatment and care. We wish them a speedy recovery. This incident is a sobering reminder of the critical importance of road safety,” he said.
He added that the ministry is committed to ensuring that roads are safe for all users.
“To this end, we are constituting a multidisciplinary investigation team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. This team will assess the mechanical condition of the vehicle, driver conduct, road infrastructure and compliance with traffic regulations. The findings will guide the implementation of evidence-based, scientific, legal and administrative measures aimed at enhancing road safety and preventing future tragedies.
“We urge all transport operators, drivers and road users to exercise maximum caution, adhere strictly to traffic laws and prioritise the safety of passengers and fellow road users. The Ministry will intensify enforcement efforts and take stern action against any violations that compromise public safety.
“Let us work together to build a culture of responsibility and vigilance on our roads. Every life matters,” he said.
