Gavin Stephens, an official from the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe, said they were ready for the games. “The season is coming to an end and everything is set for our Provincial Club Championships that will be in Harare tomorrow and Sunday. We are going to have four men’s teams and four women’s clubs competing,” said Stephens.
Bulawayo is likely to draw players from Bulawayo Athletic Club and Queens Sports Club with Matabeleland Hockey Board’s Easter competition winners Hippo Valley from Chiredzi representing Masvingo.
Stephens said the weekend Provincial Club Championships would also be used to prepare for the National Club Championships set for December in Bulawayo.
Commenting on the revived league, Stephens said he was optimistic that next year the league will be more competitive.
“There is room for improvement in the way we are running the league. What is needed is to have more regular competitions so that the standard of play improves.
“Next year promises to be better for our hockey,” said Stephens.
Meanwhile, the HAZ will hold their general meeting tomorrow in Harare before the start of the Inter-provincial Club Championships.
