THE recent arrest of Premier Service Medical Aid Society finance executive Marshall Mashavave on allegations of fraud, forms part of the wider measures being implemented by the newly appointed board to strengthen corporate governance and protect members’ funds, the society’s board chairperson, Mr Nobert Machinjike, has said.
Mashavave, together with two other suspects, Mlambo Gabaza Barnabas and Tafara Tomukudza Mafemba, last Friday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tapiwa Kuhudzai, who remanded them in custody to today for bail application.
The trio is accused of orchestrating a fraudulent procurement arrangement involving Minana Technology Solutions (Private) Limited, which allegedly resulted in actual financial prejudice of US$57 658 and potential prejudice of US$17 160 060.
Confirming the board’s clean-up strategy, Mr Machinjike said the board was undertaking a comprehensive process to strengthen accountability and address any fraudulent or irregular activities within the society.
“This development (arrest) forms part of the broader measures being undertaken by the newly appointed PSMAS board to strengthen corporate governance, enhance accountability and address any fraudulent or irregular activities that may have occurred within the society.”
Mr Machinjike said the board’s priority was to identify and close financial leakages and ensure that the society’s resources were directed towards improving services for its members.
“The board’s focus is to identify and close financial leakages and ensure that the society’s resources are properly safeguarded and utilised for the benefit of its members,” he said.
“Ultimately, we want to ensure that the funds received by PSMAS are channelled towards improving the quality and effectiveness of the PSMAs medical card and the services available to our membership, so that members can access healthcare without unnecessary inconvenience,” Mr Machinjike said.
He added that the board remained committed to strengthening the society’s governance systems, protecting members’ interests and ensuring that PSMAS operated in a transparent, accountable and sustainable manner.
The new board chaired by Mr Machinjike was appointed at the end of 2025, and immediately hit the ground running.
Barely six months after the new board assumed office, PSMAS successfully held its annual general meeting (AGM) in Harare after going for years without convening the statutory meeting.
The meeting was widely welcomed, especially after years of administrative turbulence.
