Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Lazarus Dokora said public-private sector engagement should complement Government efforts to achieve MDG goals as Government on its own could not meet the education needs of all less privileged children in the country.
Deputy Minister Dokora said this at a ceremony at which SeedCo donated $900 in fees to 20 students at Saint Marnocks primary and secondary schools.
The company also donated 360kg of mealie-meal to Harare Children’s Home.
“As Government, we are cognisant of the fact that the needs of the four million learners in our schools cannot be satisfied through the efforts of the Treasury alone.
“We need various players to come on board to support education,” Deputy Minister Dokora said.
“The private sector is expected to chip in and plough back into the community from which flows profits and a good name.”
He thanked SeedCo for the generous gesture under its corporate social responsibility programme.
In a speech read on his behalf by the company’s human resource manager, Mr Patrick Mutandwa, SeedCo managing director Mr Denias Zaranyika, said it was part of their role to give back to the community, especially the farming community, as it played a key role in their business.
“We take great satisfaction in ploughing back to the community.
“SeedCo has a vibrant and robust corporate social responsibility programme where we partner with communities to support less privileged children,” he said.
“It is with this in mind that we have agreed to continue assisting less privileged children as we invest in future leaders of tomorrow.”
Despite facing numerous challenges, Government says it is determined to see Zimbabwe make some progress towards achieving the MDGs by 2015.
In 2000, world leaders at the United Nations summit agreed to adopt eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce extreme poverty and to improve social services.
