Public support key for a crime-free society

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is committed to working with the community to create a crime-free society and service-oriented force as part of its efforts to attain Vision 2030 of turning Zimbabwe into a middle income economy, Harare Suburban District’s Chief Superintendent Smart Matongo has said.

He said the commitment was in line with the force’s theme for this year, “ZRP Rebranding to Build Public Confidence for Peace and Economic Development in the Second Republic”.

Chief Superintendent Matongo was speaking at the official launch of the reinvigoration of the Harare Suburban District Client Service Charter in Hatcliffe on Friday.

“ZRP has an open door and welcomes public participation in policing,” he said.

“Such a platform encourages the mutual exchange of ideas, the chief aim being that of facilitating a crime-free society.

“Your ideas and participation in policing is an important treasure which has perennially allowed us as the ZRP to grow in providing the highest international standard of policing.”

Supt Matongo urged citizens to work together with the police in accounting for criminals within the community.

“While crime knows no boundaries, I urge you all to work together with local police, put resources together, share information to expose crime and criminals in your communities and ensure that they are brought to book.

“Remember crime does not pay,” he said.

“Fighting crime and reducing road traffic accidents remains the core business of the police.

“ZRP will stand guided by the President’s principle of hard work and transparency.’’

Harare Suburban district crime consultative chairperson Mr Thulani Mpofu said despite previous challenges, the police had been exceptional in fighting crime.

“Suburban police have been doing well in fighting crime and have been at the very top in the province,” he said.

“This is a direct result of the synergies in our communities between the police station and residents.

“Apart from increased visibility, we are moving with speed to implement tech based solutions to help and assist the police with preventative rather than reactionary policing.”
