PUPIL (12) UNVEILS FIRST BOOK

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD David Livingstone Primary School pupil,  Ngaavongwe Mukanyi, will today unveil her first book as a child author, in what could be a milestone moment for the local publishing industry.

The book’s launch coincides with the Independence Day celebrations set for today.

Titled “Joyful’s Journey — Triumph from Diversity”, the book will be launched at Bethel Chapel in Harare’s Avenues area.

Motivational speaker, writer and preacher, Samuel Chawana, is one of the special guests at the event.

Chawana, who recently published two books, said he was honoured when Ngaavongwe’s family approached him to mentor their daughter.

“It’s quite an honour that the family of Ngaavongwe has trusted me to provide a mentor for their daughter.

“I haven’t met them in person but we have been liaising online and exchanging notes.

“From the interactions I had with them and their daughter, the kid is super intelligent.

“I will only meet them physically tomorrow (today) at the launch taking place at Bethel Church, which is located at corner of Selous Avenue and 9th Street in Harare,” he said.

Chawana, who made history when he led a church in Kwekwe at the urge of 16,  added:

“I will continue to assist her because I have seen her potential.

“Intelligent kids like Ngaavongwe need our advice. It’s very rare for someone who is 12 to achieve this milestone.”

According to the 12-year-old’s biography, she has a passion for writing, dancing and singing.

In her acknowledgements, she said:

“First and foremost, thank you to the Almighty God for helping me through the journey of writing this book and, most importantly, giving me the gift of life and the skill of writing.

“Thank you to my parents, Charles and Sharon Mukanyi for giving me the idea of being a child author as well as support and motivation.”

The book is about a young African American who finds herself in America who is about to start high school.

She faces several challenges like body-shaming, hate, racism and other obstacles, which she intends to overcome.
