There was chaos at Manunure High School in Kwekwe when a Form 2 learner allegedly opened a tear smoke canister in class on Thursday.

Some learners reportedly fainted while some were rushed to various health institutions after they faced breathing difficulties due to the smoke.

The School Head, only identified as Madokudya, confirmed the incident but said the incident was not as serious as reported.

“The child opened the tear smoke canister in class but no one was injured. We have just sent the child back home to pick up his parents so that we can look at how best we can solve the matter,” said Madokudya.

A School Development Committee member, Councillor Tapiwanashe Muganhu, however, said some learners were rushed to hospital while some fainted.

“It’s true, some children even fainted while some were rushed to hospital. Investigations are still underway so that we establish where the child got the tear smoke canister from,” he said.

Manunure is one of the biggest schools in Zimbabwe with enrolment hovering around 3000 and more than 100 teachers.
