Purpose is the engine of greatness

Hunt For Greatness

Milton Kamwendo

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote: “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

We need to live a life of purpose.

We are not born merely to exist. We are born to contribute; to make a difference in some way. Each of us arrives on earth carrying potential, possibility and purpose.

This bundle of gifts is meant for the uplifting of others.

The Latin phrase “Non nobis solum nati sumus (Not for ourselves alone are we born)” captures this truth perfectly.

When we live only for self-preservation, self-promotion or self-gratification, we diminish the meaning of our existence. When we live for a cause greater than ourselves, we discover significance.

Purpose gives life direction, energy and dignity. Purpose strengthens. It transforms existence from survival to service, from wandering to meaningful impact. To strengthen your purpose is to strengthen your compass. It is to align your daily actions with the deeper reason you are here.

Anchor of strength

In uncertain and turbulent times, purpose steadies you. Purpose is the unseen anchor that holds you firm when storms of change, disappointment or loss arise.

People without purpose drift. They are easily swayed by trends, opinions or fear. People with purpose endure. They have staying power. They navigate with clarity. Purpose turns suffering into sacrifice. It turns challenges into chapters of growth. Without purpose, success feels hollow and empty. With purpose, struggle feels worthwhile.

Strong purpose answers three questions:

Who am I? — Understanding identity

Why am I here? — Knowing your reason

Who benefits because I exist? — Defining your contribution

When you know the answers, your life moves from reaction to intention. Purpose is a journey.

“Not for ourselves alone are we born”

The phrase “Non nobis solum nati sumus” traces back to Cicero, the Roman philosopher and statesman.

Cicero argued that human beings are bound by a moral duty to contribute to the welfare of others.

He stated that civilisation depends on individuals who recognise that their talents and time are entrusted to them for service, not selfishness.

This principle still holds. The strongest societies, organisations and leaders are those driven by shared purpose and contribution. The weakest are consumed by personal gain and narrow ambition. A life lived only for self is too small a thing to die for.

You are born not just to take, but to give; not just to have, but to help. With this realisation, you step into the arena of greatness.

Powered engine

Purpose is power because it gives meaning to effort. When you are clear about why you do what you do, energy flows naturally. You cease to be a wheelbarrow that goes as far as it is pushed.

You do not need constant external motivation. Purpose fuels you from within.

Purpose is the engine of greatness. Purpose turns work into a calling, routine into a rhythm, and pain into a process. Purpose-driven people outlast the motivated because their energy is anchored in meaning, not mood.

Clarity of purpose creates endurance and persistence. It is the difference between running aimlessly and running towards a finish line that matters.

Strength through reflection

Purpose is not something you invent. You uncover it. It often lies buried beneath busyness, comparison and distraction.

Take time to reflect on the following:

What activities make you feel alive?

What problems stir your passion?

What skills come naturally to you?

Where can your strength meet the world’s need?

Reflection transforms existence into awareness. The more you know yourself, the more clearly you see your purpose.

The Examen, journalling, quiet walks or conversations with mentors can all help you clarify the patterns of your calling.  Strong leaders and high performers make reflection a habit because they know purpose fades without renewal.

Passion, skill and service nexus

Purpose lives at the intersection of passion (what you love), competence (what you are good at) and contribution (what benefits others).

If you only follow passion without competence, you risk frustration. If you work only for competence without passion, you burn out.

When your passion and skill meet the service of others, purpose blossoms. Where purpose blooms, greatness lingers.  This is why purpose is never private. It always points outward. Even the most personal calling ultimately benefits people beyond you. The underlying current of purpose is always contribution.

Purpose strengthens resilience

When your “why” is strong, you can endure almost any “how”.

Purpose sustains perseverance. It turns pain into progress because it gives context to difficulty. You stop asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and start asking, “What is this preparing me for?”

Purpose is a greatness frame.

Those who live with purpose can bend, but they do not break. They see setbacks as redirection, not rejection.

They interpret obstacles as refining fire, not dead ends. Purpose protects you from despair because it reminds you that your life has meaning beyond your bundle of worries and beyond the pain of the moment.

Discipline of purposeful living

To strengthen purpose, translate it into daily discipline. Translate purpose into daily routines. Purpose without practice is potential wasted.

Ask yourself each morning:

What can I do today that serves my purpose?

Who can I help, empower or uplift today?

What would my best self do in this situation?

Strong purpose does not live in slogans. It lives in schedules. It lives in routines. It shows up in how you treat people, how you use time and how you respond to challenges.

Discipline converts purpose into a pattern. A pattern predicts greatness.

As a purpose-driven leader, create movements, not just moments. Inspire from conviction, not convenience.

Greatness is not about ego but about service. Align your work with impact.

Strengthen your purpose daily

Purpose is not a one-time revelation. It is a journey and not a sprint. It is a lifelong refinement. It grows as you grow.

Each day, renew and recommit to your “why”. Revisit your values. Reaffirm your reason. Reconnect with those you serve.

The more you practise purpose, the stronger it becomes.

The world is full of people chasing greatness. It needs more people living with purpose; “Non nobis solum nati sumus (Not for ourselves alone are we born)”.

Live in such a way that your existence benefits others. Let your talents, time and resources become channels of impact. When your purpose is strong, your path becomes clear. You live with focus, courage and joy. You no longer drift. You drive. You no longer merely survive. You serve.

Strengthen your purpose. Live for more than yourself. Give more than you take. Build more than you own.

Committed to your greatness.
