LONG time Highlanders Football club benefactor Tshinga Dube has called on sports administrators to lobby Members of Parliament to come up with a piece of legislation that punishes sports hooligans.
Dube was speaking ahead of the clash between Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium tomorrow.
Some matches pitting the two sides have ended prematurely in recent years as a result of crowd violence.
The most recent incident was last season when the match was abandoned barely 35 minutes into the match with DeMbare leading two nil.
Both sets of supporters stormed the pitch.
Running battles with the police followed before the commissioner of the day officially called off the match.
“It’s high time we had laws in the country that criminalise sports hooliganism as violence in sports paints the country in bad light. Sports administrators should lobby MPs to come up with a law that prosecutes soccer hooligans, say for example, up to six months in prison if convicted by the courts.
“In this age, we have no place for soccer hooligans in our society. I implore supporters of both Highlanders and Dynamos to exercise restraint when the two teams play on Sunday,” said Dube.
The Premier Soccer League kicks of this weekend with games set for Saturday and Sunday across the country.
