IT was drama galore in Bulawayo’s city centre when three furious friends turned vigilantes and gave a suspected elderly thief a thorough broom-beating after he allegedly stole their pushcart.

The trio, identified as Elijah Moyo (23), Eliah Moyo (23) and Brian Mpofu (25) from Magwegwe North, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Abednico Ndebele facing assault charges. They were remanded in custody to10 October pending further investigations.

Prosecutor Josephine Gurazhira told the court the incident occurred on 20 September around 6PM at the bustling intersection of George Silundika Street and 4th Avenue.

The complainant, Martin Mativedza (52), allegedly stole the men’s pushcart. But his joyride was cut short when the owners tracked him down. In a fit of rage, the trio reportedly rained blows on him, striking him several times on the body and head with a broom.

The city spectacle drew a large crowd as Mativedza pleaded for mercy. Onlookers eventually stepped in and broke up the altercation before things got bloodier. Police were called, leading to the trio’s arrest.

A simple pushcart turned into a passport to court as the broom-wielding men now face justice of their own.
