A MAN who caused the death of two people after the trailer of a vehicle he was driving disengaged and hit them along Nketa Drive in Bulawayo’s Mabutweni Suburb, has been convicted of culpable homicide.

Dumisani Ncube (37) appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Nyaradzo Ringisai who remanded him out of custody to tomorrow for sentence.

The accident victims are Sineta Ncube (67) and her granddaughter Loretta Ncube (14).

Prosecuting, Mr Tony Kamudyariwa said Ncube was driving a Toyota Quantum vehicle that was pulling a trailer which was not properly secured with safety chains.

“On August 26, the accused was driving a South African registered Toyota Quantum vehicle which was towing a trailer along Nketa Drive due North.

The two now deceased were walking along the same road, but on the left, away from the road,” said Mr Kamudyariwa.

“The trailer disengaged from the vehicle and hit the two deceased.”

The court heard that the two victims died on the spot and their bodies were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for postmortem.

According to a postmortem report produced as an exhibit, Sineta sustained multiple fractures while Loretta succumbed to a fractured skull and brain damage.

Said the prosecutor: “After the impact the driver drove off the scene for two kilometres and came back after 15 minutes.”

Ncube (the accused) told the court in mitigation that he was helping the family financially and also using his vehicle to transport them for funeral arrangements — @andile_tshuma.
