LOG leaders Chicken Inn are planning to engage the Premier Soccer League to look into the suspension of their captain Danny Phiri who is set to miss their next assignment against ZPC Kariba because of yellow cards. Coach Joey Antipas suggested that the league could have erred when they announced yesterday that Phiri and Whawha’s Blessing Chidzero are not available for selection this week after amassing three yellow cards each. The Gamecocks are eager to maintain their spot at the top of the table and need all their men available at this stage of the race.
Phiri put up a commendable show in the national team’s colours last Sunday when he featured as the only home-based player in the 1-1 draw against Guinea in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Rufaro.
“To me it sounds a bit strange because we thought he had only two yellow cards,” said Antipas.
“I’m not sure if he has picked up all those cards as they say, so we are going to do more enquiries with the PSL to find out if he, indeed, has three yellows.
“But I am happy we will have two other players — Elvis Chipezeze and Edmore Chirambadare — coming back from the national team.
“It’s obviously going to be a difficult game because ZPC have been picking up form of late. I am sure we will be ready for them. We may have to play on without Danny.”
Besides Phiri, the duo of Lawrence Mhlanga and Raphael Kutinyu will also be missed as they are away with the national Under-23 team at the Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.
The Young Warriors lost 0-1 against Burkina Faso in their first game at the Africa Games.
Chicken Inn are enjoying their place in the sun as they currently occupy the summit of the table and enjoying a four-point cushion.
The Gamecocks pulled off a big win in their last match against city rivals Highlanders when they emerged 3-2 victors at Barbourfields.
And, according to PSL, Phiri was booked in the derby.
He was also carrying cards from previous matches against Dongo Sawmill at Vengere in July and against Whawha back in April.
