RISING stars Emmanuel Rabvu and Nyashadzashe Mellissa Kambezo proved their mettle on the chessboard as they were crowned champions of the JR Mawere Under-20 Individual Chess Tournament, which wrapped up in style on Monday evening at Kwekwe High School.

Held over the Africa Day holiday weekend, the prestigious tournament, now in its fifth edition, attracted an overwhelming turnout, with players ranging from Under-8 to Under-20 categories. The event is staged annually in honour of the late Kwekwe mayor and town clerk, Johnson Rex Mawere, a man remembered for his deep commitment to youth empowerment through sport. Rabvu clinched the Boys Under-20 Open section title with a total of six points, edging past strong contenders Kudakwashe Tembo and Tafadzwa Mukombedza.

In the Girls Under-20 Open section, Kambezo reigned supreme with 6.5 points, ahead of Carol Ndlovu, who took silver, while Grace Zvarebwa secured bronze.

Tournament chairman Itayi Madicha hailed the event’s growth and hinted at bigger ambitions going forward.

“This was our fifth edition of the JR Mawere Under-20 Invitational Chess Championship, and we’re thrilled with the turnout. We’re now looking at expanding the tournament into a regional fixture,” said Madicha.

“We’re grateful to Kwekwe High for providing accommodation, especially since athletes came from all ten provinces.”

Madicha explained that the event wasn’t just about competition but also had developmental value.

“The tournament catered for juniors aged eight to twenty, and it ran smoothly with no issues in vetting. It also served as a qualifying platform for the upcoming Intercontinental Junior Chess Tournament in Cape Verde,” he added.

“Importantly, it was also part of the chess arbiters’ assessment process for upgrading their credentials.”

Madicha extended heartfelt gratitude to the Mawere family, whose continued support has made the tournament possible year after year.

“Chess has become an integral part of the JR Mawere legacy. There’s no greater joy than seeing young people shine and showcase their talent through this platform,” said Madicha.
