THE Rainbow Amateur Netball League was successfully launched at White City Stadium in Bulawayo with more than 20 teams turning up.
The first event saw Platinum Stars coming up tops as they won $1 000, a trophy and 10 T-shirts after they defeated Glow Petroleum 21-19 in the final. Glow Petroleum pocketed $800 while Hwange Queens finished third.
Mwachepa and ZRP Bulawayo pocketed $700 and $600 respectively for their fourth and fifth places.
All the teams that participated were given $500 each.
Top netball teams turned up for the launch in which fuel procurement and distribution company, Pickglow Trading managing director Aaron Chinhara, pledged his support for the sport and called for professionalism and transparency. “I could have sponsored any other sport but I chose netball because there is need to empower the girl child.
“You have started very well and you have motivated us to bring in more. The turn out is very pleasing and I urge you to be professional and transparent.
‘‘The time has gone where the girl child played for nothing. We want to take this league to greater heights, you will meet other netball payers from across the world.‘My aim is to see the sport I love most grow.’’
Pickglow has injected $250 000 for the league and it will review the amount as the season goes.
