We might not be completely off with the shorts and sunglasses, but rainbow colours are the thing this spring.
They have undoubtedly taken the country by storm as we transition from the dreary winter months to the beautiful days of spring and summer.
This is when social media comes in handy in giving away the best ways to enjoy the much-appreciated season of the year.
Numerous enjoyable and creative trends have taken over TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. However, the emergence of rainbow picnics has swept social media like fake news and made its way into people’s hearts, residing rent-free.
For the rainbow picnic, each person will bring a drink, snack, or dessert representing the colour of the rainbow which they have been allocated and deliver them to one another at the same time.
Summer 2022 is finally here, and I believe we can all agree that we must make the most of it. Rest is essential for having the best summer ever, and so is having a great time!
Getting together with friends is something we all need. Work and personal responsibilities can’t be the only theme in our lives. Having fun with your besties is a must.
Sometimes, hitting a bar, partying or braai just might not do the trick. If the weather’s nice then how about taking your friends into nature?
Spending time under a sunny sky and lying on your back on green lawns while enjoying your favourite food is the best way to relax with those you love.
The thrill has switched from just colours to picnics that warm our hearts, and if you are fortunate enough to have brights in your closet, it is time to bring them out.
You don’t even need to take a long vacation to do this. You just have to find a venue with nice green lawns, and trees for the much-needed shade and perhaps a swimming pool might close the challenge.

While some people opt to assign colours to each other, others want to be more flexible and allow each member to choose their colours.
The anticipation of seeing what each guest brings to the picnic will excite you. Think of it as a picnic with a twist.
The red theme might go along with red apples, tomatoes, snacks packaged in red, red wine and the like, the same applies to other themes.
If green is your colour, think avocado or cucumber sandwiches, green apples, and grapes. Most meals don’t come in a single colour, but the point is to be creative even if it means choosing a main character colour for your dish with the others serving as supporting acts.
Now that everyone has their colour picked out for them, it’s time to choose the food and drink pairings to match your shade. Since it’s a picnic, pretty much anything goes.
The all-important task at this point is to make sure everyone’s on the same page regarding the overarching menu.
Remember, it’s dubbed a challenge for a reason! This is the time to exercise those creative muscles.
Trendsetters say the rainbow colours will be a big thing and will bring back the 2010 colour-blocking with a style.
Popular musician DJ Zinhle and her daughter Kairo have also risen to the occasion. DJ Zinhle recently invited close family and friends to a colourful 10-year celebration of her jewellery business called Era.
The attendees understood the assignment as they graced her occasion in multiple bright colours. The attendees unsurprisingly came together to form a rainbow-like maze.
The rest of Mzansi has embarked on calling friends to their space for rainbow picnics. There is no limit to it, it can be done with family or colleagues.

Velda Musengeyi and her friends refused to qualify as laggards on this one, the squad had their colourful picnic, with a blend of yellow, green, red and black. Yes, black, who could have thought a dark colour as black would blend with bright?
In an interview, with Chronicle Showbiz, Musengeyi said she first encountered this trend on Instagram and instantly fell in love with it.
“I first came across this trend on Instagram and I loved it, it was love at first sight. However, I just let it slide, I came across more and more challenges and I envied that myself. I discussed this with my friends and we had a week to prepare for our respective themes. We each chose our colours. I chose yellow because I love it and I also felt like it would be easy to find content in that colour. And yes, we all pulled it through, it was a great experience and we loved it. We would do it all over again if we may.
“The spring season is known to be celebrated through colour. We have also noted that people have decided to take the colourful theme to their events. Guests are most of the time feeling happy by just being in a colourful space.
“Colours bring out the best and most exciting moods and that is all we need right now after the pandemic drained us. So, I think this trend comes at a time when we just needed it the most,” Musengeyi said.
She said the venue for their picnic was in the garden at their home in Khumalo suburb.
“We needed a place where there was shade and green lawns and since we didn’t want to have another expense, we just decided to do it at home in the garden. There was also an advantage of a swimming pool so the breeze from the pool was just breath-taking. It was amazing, we had the time of our lives,” she said. -@SeehYvonne
