RAINS ruined the final day of the Logan Cup tournament yesterday, but that did not stop Mountaineers from embarking on a midweek party after the side was crowned champions for the second year running at Takashinga. Mountaineers had done enough the previous day to earn the points to win the 2017-18 championship, thanks to Ngoni Mupamba (158) maiden century and another ton from Donald Tiripano (121) which secured the bonus point first innings lead against Rising Stars. Eventually, they finished on 56 points, seven ahead of second-placed Mashonaland Eagles. Shepherd Makunura’s side defended the title they lifted last year.
It was also a special match for Mupamba who wrote his own piece of history by scoring a century on his first-class début.
Mountaineers piled 420 runs in their first innings but Rising Stars made them sweat for the honours with a strong response of 386 runs.
Stars’ Taffy Mpariwa also had a maiden ton (104) in the same match.
Mupamba, however, could not replicate his first innings feat falling for a single digit score while Tiripano (54) was unbeaten at close of play on Day Three. The officials yesterday decided the outfield at Takashinga was not suitable for the game to continue and Mountaineers were presented with the title.
