A 23-year-old man from Inyathi, Matabeleland North, has been arrested for allegedly raping his 14-year-old cousin whom he paid a $1 to buy her silence.

The man from Second Avenue Co-operative in Inyathi pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mr Chrispen Mberewere last week facing a rape charge. He was remanded in custody to Tuesday for continuation of trial.

The State’s case as presented by prosecutor, Mr Simbarashe Manyiwa is that on 27 December 2016 at around 11am, the girl went to her cousin’s homestead to ask him to shave her head as he normally does. It was the State’s case that the girl did not have money to pay him but she promised to pay him on another day. The court heard that he agreed to shave the complainant’s head.

He suggested to shave the complainant in his bedroom since the electric cord was too short to connect to the shaving machine outside. Since the girl trusted her cousin she agreed.

The court heard that after shaving the girl, the cousin started playing the radio at high volume before closing the door and raping her.

He then gave her a dollar and warned her not to tell anyone about what had transpired.

The court heard that the girl, however, reported the matter at Inyathi Police Station leading to her cousin’s arrest. The girl was taken to Inyathi District Hospital for medical examination.
