Kadoma-bred comedian Robson Mabhugu, affectionately known as Mupengo Roby, firmly believes he has a special calling as a content creator.
The 23-year-old rose to prominence with several skits, including one reciting Jaison Muvevi’s famous line: “Manje mukanditi bvruu-bvruu ndinonyarara.”
Mupengo Roby asserts that he has plenty to offer.
“I am still doing skits and I will not stop because this is my calling,” he stressed in a recent interview. “I am still in Kadoma and proud of my town, which I represent well in comedy and skits. Fans should expect more from me during the festive season and even beyond.”
He also insisted that he is not a one-hit wonder, despite the rise in his popularity following the Muvevi skit.
“Real content creators don’t run dry,” he emphasised.
Muvevi was arrested some two years ago, just three days after allegedly gunning down three people in Hwedza, Mashonaland East province.
Additionally, Mupengo created a skit inspired by his statements.
Mupengo Roby revealed he was born a natural content creator, although his parents were initially against the idea.
His content often targets politicians, businesspeople, socialites, celebrities, and ordinary citizens.
He is the fifth-born in a family of six children. Despite their objections to his chosen comedy path, his parents would often force him to go into town and visit industrial areas in search of a job.
Instead, he spent the time with friends creating more skits.
“For me, comedy is natural because even in class, I was infamous for being punished for pulling stunts on school authorities and teachers,” he shared.
“I even loved sitting in the back row in class.
“However, my parents never knew about this troublesome side of me. All they wanted was for me to attend school and eventually secure a good formal job.”
In most of his skits, he portrays a class teacher while other characters are his students.
As he began earning from his content and receiving endorsements from corporations, his parents gradually began to understand and support his chosen career path.
He has since converted his parents’ bedroom into a studio where he shoots his content.
Mupengo Roby’s rise to fame has earned him recognition and endorsements from corporates.
However, he believes more needs to be done to support rising content creators.
“Sometimes I may have a good idea for a skit, but I fail due to a lack of funds and efficient tools of the trade, like cameras, laptops, and even proper shooting space,” he said.
He concluded by stating, “I feel it is also our duty as content creators to fight against drug and substance abuse.”
