WHEN Kudakwashe Mahachi steps onto the Sakubva Stadium pitch this Sunday, it will be far more than just another league match. For the Highlanders star, it will be a deeply emotional homecoming — a return to the place where his career was given a second chance when everything seemed to be slipping away.
At one point, Mahachi’s football journey appeared to be over. Once regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most talented exports, the former Warriors winger found himself battling controversy, criticism and doubt. His time in South Africa had come to a difficult halt, and opportunities were drying up fast.
Very few clubs were willing to take a chance on him. But Manica Diamonds saw something others did not. The Mutare-based side offered him more than just a contract. They gave him hope, stability and a chance to rebuild.

For two seasons, the Gem Boys became his safe place. At Sakubva Stadium, far from the noise and pressure, Mahachi slowly found his way back. While others focused on his past, the club chose to believe in his ability.
Now, in a twist of fate, he returns to that same ground a different player — stronger, calmer and playing some of the best football of his career.
After rejoining his boyhood club Highlanders, many expected Mahachi to resume his role as an attacking winger. But coach Benjani Mwaruwari had other ideas. In a bold move, Mahachi was converted into a left-back.
At first, the decision raised eyebrows. Supporters questioned how a player known for flair and attacking instincts would cope in a defensive role. But Mahachi has answered those doubts on the pitch.
Week after week, he has grown into one of Highlanders’ most dependable players. His calmness on the ball, experience and tactical awareness have added balance to the team. On the left side, he has become both a defender and a playmaker — helping to steady a youthful squad.

Interestingly, this shift is not entirely new to him. Before becoming known as a winger, Mahachi actually played as a left-back in his early days — a role that has now come back at the perfect time.
His resurgence has not gone unnoticed. This week, Mahachi was named Highlanders’ Players’ Player of the Month for April after a string of impressive performances. The award carried special meaning, as it came from his teammates — those who see his hard work and commitment every day.
He received a certificate and a US$500 cash prize sponsored by the Business Friends of Bosso. For a player once written off, it was a powerful moment.
Sunday’s match at Sakubva is, therefore, more than just a game. It is a return to the place that helped rebuild him — the ground where he found joy in football again, where he was accepted when his reputation had taken a hit, and where supporters chose belief over judgement.
Now, he comes back as one of Highlanders’ key players. The timing is important for his team as well. Highlanders have struggled to turn strong performances into wins this season.
Despite losing only once, too many draws have slowed their progress up the league table.
Mahachi has been one of the few consistent performers. His presence has helped bring stability, while his versatility has given coach Mwaruwari more options. But as the season heats up, Bosso can no longer afford to keep dropping points.
The trip to Mutare will not be easy. Manica Diamonds may be near the bottom of the table, but Sakubva Stadium remains a tough place to visit — especially with the energy of their home supporters behind them. The Gem Boys are also desperate to turn their season around and will be highly motivated to make a statement against Highlanders.
For Mahachi, though, this match carries a different meaning. It is not just about three points. It is about returning to where everything changed — and proving just how far he has come.
