Reconstruction of a 7km stretch, which was in a bad state along Domboshava Road, is continuing with Government having so far opened up about 1,8km of the road near Mverechena Business Centre.

Plans to construct feeder roads around the area are also at an advanced stage. The 7km stretch starts from Mverechena Business Centre to Chogugudza area, while the 1,8km stretch, that has been completed and opened to traffic, starts from Mverechena to Chitate.

Recently, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Senator Aplonia Munzverengwi led a delegation on a tour of roads in Domboshava, where they opened the 1,8km stretch.

The road reconstruction, which commenced on April 12 is expected to end on May 31.

In an interview, Minister Mhona said the project was not meant for Domboshava alone, but would be extended to Bindura and feeder roads in the area.

“First of all, I would like to apologise to the people in Domboshava area, that we took so long to construct this road. But as you are all aware, the world over in some other countries they are being assisted with funds for road rehabilitation but as for us, because of the illegal sanctions imposed on us, we are doing it by ourselves using the money from Treasury.”

Minister Mhona said as a listening leader, President Mnangagwa had directed him to visit the area in line with his vision of “leaving no one and no place behind” and his mantra of, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”.

“I want to thank the listening President, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who has been running around every day trying to mobilise resources for our country. As you know we are under very punitive sanctions, under which we cannot tap into other jurisdictions in terms of concessional facilities. We are managing from our resources. This is also a humble plea to the people of Zimbabwe that yes we cannot rehabilitate each and every road at the same time but once we start we will continue until we complete the project,” he said.

Minister Munzverengwi said, “We are here to witness progress. It was no longer a secret that this road was bad. But we thank President Mnangagwa for this development, indeed through his mantra of ‘leaving no one and no place behind’ there is development across Mashonaland East Province.

“Domboshava has more than 150 000 households so you can imagine the volume of traffic on this road. We are an agriculture province and most farmers transport their farm produce through this road. So we are thankful. These are the works of the Second Republic. We urge contractors tasked with rehabilitating our roads to work hard. At this pace, we will surely achieve Vision 2030.”

The Government recently also engaged Exodus & Company Neube Burrow Consortium to design and construct the Harare-Mvurwi-Guruve-Kanyemba Road while the construction of access roads in the Mt Hampden area, including the new 6km boulevard that stretches from Bindura Road to the New Parliament Building, also commenced recently.
