Cabinet is tracking weekly the 16 wheat production enablers to ensure maximum yields on the back of a record winter wheat crop on 121 982ha, ensuring that farmers will not be hampered in getting the expected more than 600 000 tonnes.
Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting that the 16 production enablers were power, water, seed, fertiliser, fuel, farmer outstanding payments, finance, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, migratory pests, mechanisation, chemicals, insurance, land issues, infrastructure, security against theft, and the policy and regulatory environment.
The Second Republic is ramping up production in the agricultural sector to ensure perennial food security and self-sufficiency.
Initially, the target was to plant the targeted area of 120 000 hectares but that has since been surpassed.
“The wheat planting deadline was 14 June, 2024 and 121 982 hectares had been planted, surpassing the targeted area of 120 000 hectares by two percent. This is the highest planting in the country in history,” said Dr Muswere.
The expected harvest is around two thirds higher than the self-sufficiency in the sort of wheat-based foods common up to now, allowing a far greater range of wheat products and more wheat in the average Zimbabweans diet.
