THE Lost in Ashes première at Westgate Cinema on Saturday night was more than a cinematic celebration.

It became a runway of glitz, daring choices, and cultural flair.

With Nollywood royalty flying in for the historic event, expectations were high, and the red carpet was abuzz with flashing cameras, designer gowns, and eager fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.

Mai TT, the woman of the hour, stole the show with her grand entrance.

Draped in a regal white-and-gold gown, she embodied power, dominance, and triumph.

She had a black haired crown.

The choice of colours symbolised purity and royalty, perfectly complementing her bold declaration:

“My glory and crown have been returned.”

With her look, she set the tone for the night and reminded everyone that this was not just a movie première but a coronation of sorts—her reclaiming of the crown.

Among the Nigerian stars, Mike Ezuruonye stood out in a velvet black agbada Nigerian outfit with shimmering sequins paired with a matching hat, effortlessly blending class with modern flair. Actress Anita Joseph dazzled in a flowing yellow lace hugging outfit gown with intricate African material, a look that drew whispers of approval across the carpet.

Chinyere Winfred opted for a more Western traditional twist, donning a vibrant glimmering huge circles dress with dramatic popular African head wrap that highlighted African pride.

Their attention to detail reflected the polish and glamour Nollywood stars are known for, raising the bar for Zimbabwean red carpets.

Local talent also rose to the occasion. Popular actress Mai Jilimba was modest with her floral pink dress, balancing elegance with boldness.

Radio personalities Beck K and V Candy did not disappoint, though, as they followed the script, understanding the assignment as they wore green, black, and a touch of African on their garments. Male stars weren’t left out—comedian Mama Vee ditched his usual acting look for a tailored brown street casual summer look, surprising many with his refined style.

Dj Ollah 7

DJ Olla 7 decided to bring the classy look with his black tuxedo, 007 style.

However, not everyone lived up to the moment.  Several guests arrived in casual outfits—denim jeans, sneakers, and uninspired dresses—that clashed with the grandeur of the evening.

Their lack of effort drew quiet criticism, especially in contrast to the polished Nollywood delegation.

“Red carpet culture is about storytelling through style,” noted one fashion commentator.

“Some Zimbabweans still treat it like an afterthought, but events of this magnitude demand excellence.”

Fans, too, noticed the gap.

One moviegoer remarked:

“The Nigerians brought their A-game, and Mai TT looked like a queen. We need to learn to respect such occasions.”

Another added: “Our stars can shine brighter if we treat the red carpet as seriously as the film.”

The verdict:

Lost in Ashes delivered not just on screen but also on the red carpet, showcasing Zimbabwe’s growing potential while exposing the need for consistency.

From Mai TT’s queenly gown to Nollywood’s polished glamour, the night reminded the local industry that presentation is part of the performance.

If Zimbabwe is to cement its place in continental cinema, it must embrace the red carpet as more than an accessory—it is an extension of the story being told.
