Redcliff eyes city status by 2030

Redcliff Town Council is seeking to achieve city status by the year 2030, Mayor Councillor Clayton Masiyatswa has said. In an interview, Clr Masiyatswa said the municipality was lining up various infrastructural development projects to achieve the city status.

He said the municipality has a population of about 3 600 and 9 424 households with the potential to grow.

“We are chasing city status by 2030. The town attained municipal status in 1978, and our duty is now to rehabilitate the infrastructure so that we upgrade them to a position where we can be a city,” said the ambitious mayor.

He said some of the projects that the town has embarked on are the construction of a water treatment plant which is set to ease water challenges in the town and upgrading of water pipes to reduce leakages.

“As you know, we relied on Ziscosteel for water supplies, and since the closure of the company, we have been struggling to get water supplies. We currently rely on Kwekwe City for water supplies. We have embarked on water treatment plant project where we will treat our own water before distributing. In the same vein, we managed to reduce non-revenue water from 60 percent to about 20 percent after we repaired most of the ageing water pipes,” said Clr Masiyatswa.

He referred to the town as an industrial hub as it is home to a number of industries, including the defunct Ziscosteel, ZimCoke, Zimchem, Steelmakers, most of which require large amounts of water for their processing.

The local authority also has one of the best road network following the rehabilitation programme.

He said the local authority also repaired 20 street lights in Rutendo and Torwood suburbs.

In terms of estate development, he said the local authority has embarked on the development of residential stands in Rennin and Stone Clare suburbs.

“We are servicing about 800 residential stands and in Stone Clare Park, the project is 80 percent complete.

“We expect this to be complete by year end. Rennin suburb low density residential stands are at 89 percent  and should be complete at the same time,” he said.
