REDCLIFF Municipality recorded a 52 percent surge in revenue inflows between September and November last year, a positive development attributed to the $38 million windfall made available to ex-Ziscosteel employees by Government as part of outstanding salaries backdated to 2009.
In September, the municipality collected $153 404, $233 443 in October and $287 221 in November, amid indications that December and January inflows would likely be around $300 000. Government signed an agreement with Hong Kong-based Company R&F to invest $1 billion to revive Ziscosteel, in a development expected to revive Redcliff and Kwekwe.
According to town clerk Mr Gilson Chakauya, the town, which has a population of about 42 500 residents and over 9 800 households, had been performing positively in terms of revenue inflows in the months under review. Mr Chakauya said they were happy that revenue inflows at the local authority were around $200 000, adding that if Government continued to pay the ex-workers, the figures were likely to reach $300 000.
“We know we collected more in December,” he said.
