Reflections on Revival from the Acts of the Apostles

The Traits of Revival

Rev. Moses Matimba

Revival is more than excitement in church. In the book of Acts, revival is the work of the Holy Spirit. It changes how leaders serve, how we obey God, and how boldly we share our faith.

1. Leaders put prayer and God’s word first

The apostles knew their main work was prayer and teaching the Word. So they chose others to handle daily needs like food distribution. This kept the church spiritually strong while still caring for people’s needs. (Acts 6:3-6)

2. Church leaders are chosen for devotion to God

In the early church, leaders were not picked for popularity or status. They were men known for their good character, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Their lives showed real love for God. (Acts 6:3-6)

3. Even simple service carries God’s power

True revival makes every job important. Stephen was chosen to serve tables, but he was also full of faith and power. God worked miracles through him. (Acts 6:8)

4. People move from religion to real faith

Revival breaks empty religious habits. In Acts, even many priests obeyed the gospel. The good news turned them from empty tradition to real repentance and faith in Christ. (Acts 6:7)

5. God’s Word grows and spreads
Where revival is present, God’s Word is not stuck in one place. It spreads, changes lives, and gives the church strength and courage to grow. (Acts 6:7)

6. God’s Word calls for obedience
When the Spirit speaks through preaching, people don’t just listen. They respond. Peter’s message cut people to the heart. They repented and obeyed the faith. (Acts 2:37-41)

7. Believers keep preaching despite trouble

Persecution did not stop the early church. It pushed them out to new places. Wherever they went, they kept preaching the Word with boldness and courage. (Acts 8:1-6)

Bottom line

Revival is not just loud worship or big meetings. Real revival shows up in Spirit-led leaders, faithful service, lives that obey God, and bold witness.

When the church protects the Word and carries it into the world, revival stops being a slogan. It becomes real life.
