Reflections on revival: The promise fulfilled

Acts 2 v 1–4

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind… And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost…” (KJV)

The day the disciples had been waiting for finally came. We call it the Day of Pentecost – a day to remember. On that day, there was a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the ‘promise of the Father’. There was the sound of wind, but it was not wind. Tongues of fire rested on the disciples, but it was not fire.

It was God Himself, coming in power, filling the room with His presence and filling the hearts of those waiting on Him. God was visiting His people. He touched lives. He transformed lives. He empowered His people. His presence overflowed, and joy erupted. That joy caused the disciples to speak in beautiful languages they had never learned, praising God and declaring His marvellous works.

Onlookers were amazed. Something new was happening. God had visited His people, and it was revival time.  It was revival time because the Church woke up to the power and presence of God. It was revival time because the Holy Spirit was poured out. It was revival time because God’s power rested on ordinary people. It was revival time because everyone was rejoicing in the Lord. When it is revival time, people begin to see the greatness and beauty of God in a new way. Even those who did not know God were touched. They watched in wonder at what He was doing among the disciples. A miracle was taking place in people they once overlooked, and it was awesome to see.

It was revival time because the promise had been kept. The Holy Spirit had come. They received Him, and their lives were never the same again. May we, too, wait with one accord – for revival still changes everything.
