THE local organising committee for the sixth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Games will today hold an awareness road show from the Bulawayo city centre to the western suburbs.

In a statement yesterday, the organisers said the road show seeks to activate and build enthusiasm within the general public about the bi-annual youth sporting extravaganza that will be held in Bulawayo from December 5 to 14.

President Mugabe is expected to officially open the Games on December 5 at Barbourfields Stadium before Zimbabwe’s Young Mighty Warriors take on holders Zambia.

“The programme of the road show starts with people converging at Africa House in the morning. The convoy consisting of the mascot, Iyasa and local organising committee staff will depart around 8AM to Makokoba along Fife Street and proceed to Mzilikazi, Barbourfields, Entumbane, Mpopoma, Emakhandeni and Cowdray Park,” said the organisers.

Jumbo, the mascot, will also entertain the crowd while lots of prizes for the public will be up for grabs.

The Games fever is already being felt in Bulawayo and surrounding areas with the local community eagerly awaiting the showpiece event to start.

President Mugabe, a key player in the Games coming to Bulawayo, told the nation that the country took pride in being awarded the opportunity to play host to the Games, emphasising that the City of Bulawayo stands to benefit immensely especially in the hospitality and tourism sector.

The President was speaking when he officially opened the Second Session of the Eighth Parliament of Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
