THE 48th African Airlines Association (AFRAA) summit kicks off in Victoria Falls today after regional players in the air transport industry arrived in the country yesterday.
Air Zimbabwe hosts the three-day event, the biggest air transport summit in Africa under the theme “Managing the Survival and Market Recovery of African Airlines”.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo is expected to deliver the key note address today, according to the event organisers.
AFRAA was established in April, 1968 in Accra, Ghana as a trade organisation open to membership of airlines of African States. There are currently 40 members from African Union member states.
Its formation was the result of historic developments and economic imperatives.
The association has been at the forefront of major initiatives in the air transport field in Africa in sensitising African airlines to take concrete actions for co-operation in operational, commercial, technical, and training fields.
It has also been instrumental in sensitising African Governments through the African Civil Aviation Commission and other regional and sub-regional organisations on the actions to be taken for the development of an efficient air transport system. It has been a catalyst for all the major policy decisions in the continent.
