Workers in the education sector have been encouraged to register for pension benefits with insurance and assurance companies countrywide to reduce the incidence of poverty after retirement. Old Mutual executive financial advisor Mr Josiah Borerwa said nearly 70 percent of retired people die as a result of an uncertain income as they have no retirement plans to cover their needs after they leave work.
He was speaking during an OK Mart classroom and beyond education expo held last week in Mutare.
“There is quite a huge number of people who are not registered to benefit through pension after retirement. Our research on retirement has revealed that over 60 percent of the workers are dying as a result of poverty in old age since they would not have any income after retirement.
“This is quite worrisome because a lot of people are falling in a trap of enhanced old aged diseases that have taken a lot of Zimbabwean, especially men,” he said.
He said the research noted that out of 10, six die after retirement because of stress related issues.
