Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede said on Friday his department was in total control of the voters roll, and dismissed allegations of vote rigging in Zimbabwe’s general elections held mid-week. Apparently caught off guard by Zanu PF thunderous victory in the polls, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has gone all out to discredit the poll, alleging vote rigging through the voters roll. The party alleges that there are a number of disparities in the voters roll which Zanu PF could have used to its advantage. The MDC-T also alleges that an Israeli company Nikuv was contracted to facilitate the rigging.
But Mudede dismissed the accusations as far-fetched, and sour grapes. All over the world, when people lose elections, they point fingers at someone,” he said. “But when they win, they do not complain.”
“They say the voters roll was manipulated, there is nothing like that. The voters roll was not manipulated at all,” Mudede added. He challenged those alleging rigging to prove their claims.
He said following a court order directing his office to furnish the MDC-T with a voters roll issued on Tuesday, the party took delivery of 1958 copies of the register.
Mudede said the MDC-T as well as other parties had been invited to collect hard copies of the voters roll before the poll, but refused. Local and foreign observers have endorsed the polls as credible, free and fair.- New Ziana
