LOW registration for the 42km Binga Kasambabezi Marathon has forced organisers of the meet to extend the deadline by another four days with the hope of getting more participants.
Registration was supposed to close on Saturday but the organisers have pushed it to Wednesday.
Thirteen athletes have registered for the 42km race, with a bulk of 700 athletes who have signed up for the meet set to compete in the half-marathon, 10km and fun run.
Recent Ncube, the local organising committee chairperson made frantic calls to athletes to register for the competition that will be held on Saturday, 29 October in Binga.
“We’ve got 700 athletes who have registered for our event (the Binga Kasambabezi Marathon). Most of the athletes will compete in the half-marathon as well as the 10km and 5km races. We’ve got 13 athletes for the full marathon and it is for this reason that we’ve extended registration for participants who want to compete in the 42km race. We’re encouraging athletes to register for the 42km race,” Ncube said.
Among athletes who have registered for the 42km race are winner of the 2022 edition of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon Jonathan Chinyoka and Matabeleland South-based Nkosiyazi Sibanda.
Chinyoka runs for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) team while Sibanda is affiliated with Blanket Mine.
Ncube said most of the athletes are coming from Zimplats, Blanket Mine and Black Rhinos athletics clubs.

Registration fee for the 42km marathon is US$10 while those interested in participating in the half-marathon will pay US$7. Registration to compete in the 10km race is US$5 and the 5km fun run athletes will pay US$2. -@ZililoR
